Ledger.com/start™ — Getting Started® | Ledger® (official)

Welcome to the Future of Self-Custody

Congratulations on taking the most significant step toward financial sovereignty. By choosing a Ledger hardware wallet, you are no longer relying on third-party exchanges or vulnerable "hot" wallets. You are now the sole gatekeeper of your digital assets. This guide serves as your definitive walkthrough for Ledger.com/start, ensuring your setup process is secure, seamless, and professional.

In the digital age, Security is not an option—it is a necessity. Ledger combines the world-class security of a Secure Element (SE) chip with a proprietary operating system (BOLOS) to keep your private keys offline at all times.

Step 1: Unboxing and Physical Inspection

Before connecting your device to any interface, verify the physical integrity of your package. Your Ledger Nano S Plus, Nano X, Flex, or Stax should arrive in a factory-sealed plastic wrap. If the box appears tampered with or if a PIN code/Recovery Phrase is already provided inside, stop immediately and contact Ledger Support.

Step 2: Initialize Your Device via Ledger.com/start

The Software Gateway

Navigate to the official Ledger.com/start portal to download the Ledger Live™ application. Ledger Live is the only official companion app designed to interact with your hardware wallet. Available for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, it provides a secure interface to manage 5,500+ coins and tokens.

Step 3: Creating Your PIN and Recovery Phrase

Once you connect your device via USB or Bluetooth, you will be prompted to "Set up as a new device." This is the most critical phase of the Getting Started® journey.

1. Set a Secure PIN

Choose a 4 to 8-digit PIN code. Avoid obvious sequences like "1234" or "0000". This PIN unlocks the physical device; it does not protect your funds if the device is lost, but it prevents unauthorized physical access.

2. The 24-Word Secret Recovery Phrase

Your device will generate 24 random words. These words are the Master Key to your funds. If your device is destroyed or lost, these 24 words are the ONLY way to recover your assets.

Rules of the Recovery Phrase:

Step 4: The Genuine Check

After your recovery phrase is confirmed, Ledger Live will perform a "Genuine Check." This process verifies that your device has not been cloned or tampered with and that the Secure Element chip is an authentic Ledger component. This is a vital layer of protection provided by the Ledger® Official ecosystem.

Managing Your Portfolio

With your device ready, you can now install apps for specific blockchains (Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, etc.) via the "My Ledger" tab in the app. Each app allows you to create an account, which generates a public address for receiving funds. Remember: Your private keys stay on the device, never on the computer.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

1. What happens if I lose my Ledger device?

Your funds are not stored "in" the device; they are on the blockchain. The device holds the keys. If you lose it, you can buy a new Ledger and enter your 24-word Secret Recovery Phrase to regain full access to your assets.

2. Can I use Ledger Live on multiple computers?

Yes. You can install Ledger Live on several devices. However, you will need to "Add Accounts" on each new installation to sync your portfolio view, which requires connecting your hardware wallet.

3. Why does my Ledger require a firmware update immediately?

Ledger frequently releases firmware updates to improve security and add support for new coins. It is a best practice to keep your device updated via the "My Ledger" section in Ledger Live.

4. Does Ledger have a "backdoor" to my recovery phrase?

No. By design, the Secure Element chip prevents the private keys/recovery phrase from ever leaving the device. Ledger (the company) has no record of your keys and cannot help you recover them if lost.

5. Is it safe to buy a Ledger from Amazon?

It is safest to buy directly from the official Ledger store. If you buy from the official Ledger storefront on Amazon, ensure you perform the "Genuine Check" in Ledger Live before use.
