Welcome to the ecosystem of secure self-custody. Follow this official guide to initialize your device, secure your recovery seed, and transact with confidence.

⚠ CRITICAL SECURITY WARNING

Never enter your recovery seed phrase on a computer keyboard or smartphone. Your 12, 20, or 24-word backup should only ever be entered directly on your Trezor device touchscreen or buttons. Trezor Support will NEVER ask for your seed phrase.

Step-by-Step Initialization Guide

Setting up your hardware wallet is the most important step in your crypto journey. Please ensure you have your device, the USB cable provided in the box, and the recovery seed cards ready.

1. Download Trezor Suite

Your bridge to the blockchain is the Trezor Suite desktop application. It provides a clean, secure interface to manage your assets without exposing your private keys to the internet.

2. Connect and Verify Firmware

Once the Suite is installed, connect your Trezor device using the provided USB cable.

Your device arrives without firmware pre-installed. This is a security feature to ensure the latest software is installed directly from our servers. Follow the prompt on your screen to Install Firmware. Once complete, the device will reboot.

3. Authenticity Check

Trezor Suite will perform a cryptographic check to verify that your device is a genuine product manufactured by SatoshiLabs. If this check fails, disconnect the device immediately and contact support.

4. Create and Back Up Your Wallet

This is the most critical step. Your device will generate a unique "Recovery Seed"—a sequence of words that holds the keys to all your funds.

Advanced Security: The "3-2-1" Wallet Hygiene Rule

While most guides stop at setup, true security requires ongoing maintenance. Here is a unique framework for advanced users to maintain operational security (OpSec) over time.

1. The Physical Gap (Air-Gap Simulation)

Even though Trezor connects via USB, treat it as if it is air-gapped. Only connect the device when you are actively signing a transaction. Leaving a hardware wallet connected to an online computer 24/7 increases the surface area for theoretical attacks or physical theft. Connect, Sign, Disconnect.

2. The Passphrase "Hidden Wallet" Strategy

Beyond the standard seed, enable the Passphrase feature. This acts as a "25th word" that you memorize. It creates a completely hidden wallet.

The Decoy Method: Keep a small amount of funds in your standard wallet (protected only by the PIN). Keep your main holdings in the hidden wallet (protected by PIN + Passphrase). If you are ever physically coerced into unlocking your device, you can unlock the standard "decoy" wallet while your main funds remain invisible.

3. Analog Redundancy

Digital backups fail. Paper degrades. Consider upgrading your backup from the paper card to a Stainless Steel Backup (like Cryptosteel). Steel protects your seed words from fire, water, and corrosion, ensuring your legacy survives natural disasters.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What if I lose my Trezor device? Are my funds lost?

No. Your funds are not stored on the device; they are on the blockchain. The device simply holds the keys. You can restore access to your funds on a new Trezor device (or any compatible wallet) using your Recovery Seed Phrase.

2. Can I use Trezor with my iPhone or Android?

Yes. The Trezor Suite Web version works on Android via WebUSB. The new Trezor Safe 5 and Model T can connect to mobile devices. However, iOS connectivity is currently limited compared to Android due to Apple's USB restrictions, though Bluetooth options are being explored for specific models.

3. What is the difference between the PIN and the Passphrase?

A PIN protects your physical device from unauthorized use if it is stolen. A Passphrase acts as an extension of your recovery seed, creating a completely separate, hidden wallet. If you forget your PIN, you can reset the device with your seed. If you forget your Passphrase, your funds in that hidden wallet are lost forever.

4. Why does the device arrive with no firmware installed?

This is a supply chain security measure. By installing firmware only when you first connect the device, we ensure that no malicious software was modified or injected during shipping or storage at a warehouse.

5. Which coins does Trezor support?

Trezor supports thousands of coins and tokens, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Cardano (ADA), and all ERC-20 tokens. You can manage most of them directly in Trezor Suite, while some may require connecting your Trezor to third-party interfaces like MetaMask or Exodus.
